About Forbidden Memories

Conceived in 2012, "Forbidden Memories" is an ongoing project by artist Xiaoze Xie focusing on the history of banned books in China to explore the subjectivity of censorship in relation to sociopolitical contexts in different periods of time. The interdisciplinary project includes systematic photographs of premodern banned books found in public collections, acquired modern banned books, a documentary film and related research materials.

Xiaoze Xie is an internationally recognized artist and the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis

Professor of Art at Stanford University. Xie has exhibited widely the United States and internationally, with solo exhibitions at the Asia Society Museum in New York, Denver Art Museum in Colorado, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, Knoxville Museum of Art in Tennessee, Modern Chinese Art Foundation in Ghent Belgium. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including  The 10th International Ink Art Biennial of Shenzhen in 2019. Xie’s work has garnered critical acclaim, his exhibitions have been reviewed in “The New York Times”, “Art in America”, and “Art News.” His work has been acquired by major institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Denver Art Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, San Jose Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of California. Xie received the Painters and Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation (2013) and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2003), among other honors.
